Some techniques Aileen browns uses in her linocuts

Reduction Linocut:

A single block is used for this method, often the white is cut away first, then a pale colour is printed. The Pale colour is cut away and another colour is printed and so on. Finially the darkest colour is printed. With this method the whole edition is completed with the last colour. However the black could be printed first as in the linocut "Watching and Thinking".

Multi block Linocut:

The block with the most detail is cut and printed and transferred to the other blocks required. These blocks are cut according to the colour required. Some quite separate colours can be on the same block. Usually the block with the most detail is then printed last. As illustrated in "Yabby Emerging".

Bitumen and Caustic Soda Linocut:

Bitumen is painted on the lino where black is required, then strong caustic soda is used to bite the lino with out the bitumen - quite tricky and a bit dangerous, but a good effect. This was used for lino cut "Swans".
